Unleashing Creativity - Craft Classes at the SCIP ECO School

SCIP ECO (Equality, Compassion, Opportunity) is a holistic not-for-profit educational school, which runs in the Sector Four slum of Faridabad, India.  It was started on the common principle of education for all. With time, it has six constructed classes and over one hundred students receive free and quality education there.

In an effort to encourage original thinking and creativity, the children keep learning craft work and drawing. They also pay a lot of attention to their writing skills just to improve their handwriting.

In a TED Talk titled “Do Schools Kill Creativity,” Sir Ken Robinson shares a story about a girl who doesn’t really like to study, but when it is the drawing class, she pays a lot of attention. This impresses her teacher. Intrigued, the teacher asks the girl, “What are you drawing?” To this, the girl replied, “I am drawing a picture of God.” Stumped, the teacher challenged that no one knows what god looks like. With all the confidence in the world, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

That’s the beauty of being a child. They are full of hope and optimism and original thoughts and abundance confidence. They are prepared to be wrong because they don’t think about being judged. At SCIP ECO School, it is our continuous effort to develop and nurture creativity. Picasso said it best when he said:

All children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.
